For several years, the United Brotherhood of Carpenters has hosted Tax Fraud/Wage Theft Day of Action events at locations throughout the country, including New Haven and Stamford. This year, we will host our Connecticut event at the Bushnell Park pavilion in Hartford on Wednesday, April 13th beginning at 4:00 pm. In previous years, we have had nearly 100 carpenters in attendance at our Connecticut events; we anticipate a similar crowd in Hartford on April 13th. This link describes in greater detail the national UBC “Day of Action” events. www.stoptaxfraud.net
This national event focuses attention on the impact of tax fraud/wage theft on the construction industry. One national study estimates that between 12.4 and 20.5 percent of the construction workforce was either paid “off the books” or misclassified as independent contractors in 2017 resulting in a loss of $8.4 billion dollars to federal and state taxpayers. A more recent study estimates that 39% of construction worker families nationwide are forced to enroll in one or more government safety net programs make ends meet. https://laborcenter.berkeley.edu/the-public-cost-of-low-wage-jobs-in-the-us-construction-industry/
