LOCAL 326. Join Local 326 union brothers and sisters, other trades and members of the community to protest against the payroll fraud practices of the out-of-state subcontractors hired by KBE on the Steelpoint Harbor residential project starting at 10 am on Saturday, February 1st, at 55 East Main Street, Bridgeport, CT
WHATS THIS ABOUT AND WHATS AT STAKE?
The development of Steelpointe has begun, which could be great news for Bridgeport. Unfortunately, the developer and contractors of the project are not great with details. KBE is managing the project, where at least five subcontractors were ordered to stop work for violating laws regarding misclassification of employees as so-called "independent contractors" and for failing to provide workers' compensation coverage for workers.
Misclassification and insurance fraud puts vulnerable workers in harm's way while depriving tax-payers of needed revenues and honest businesses at a significant competitive disadvantage.
To add insult to injury, the project is being funded in part with a 12-year municipal tax break, receiving a $20 million low interest loan from the state of Connecticut and was given nearly $1 million for environmental cleanup.
KBE benefits from public money and subcontractors who cheat workers and taxpayers. We cannot sit by quietly while this happens. If we did, think of what KBE and others might do next!
